A new benchmark for e-bike security: Embedded Comodule IoT & 2Lock hub lock lowers insurance rates up to 70%
Turning connectivity into real protection
E-bike theft remains one of the biggest concerns for riders and manufacturers alike. In Germany alone, over 600,000 bikes are stolen each year, with recovery rates still low. As e-bikes become more valuable, traditional locks and standalone trackers are no longer enough.
Now, a new collaboration between Comodule, 2Lock, and Hepster is changing that. Together, they’ve created an embedded smart security solution that combines digital and mechanical protection with integrated theft insurance, delivering a new level of security, simplicity, and savings for connected e-bikes.
“High concern of e-bike theft remains a main barrier to mass adoption of e-bikes in urban mobility. This partnership shows that investing in e-bike security technology not only pays off and provides a competitive edge but also makes e-bikes much safer and more convenient to use.”

Insurance recognizing the impact of embedded security
At the heart of this innovation is a simple but powerful principle: when an e-bike can protect itself, everyone benefits.
By integrating Comodule’s IoT platform with 2Lock’s mechanical hub lock and Hepster’s adaptive insurance model, connected e-bikes reward riders with drastically lower insurance premiums.
Thanks to this proven level of protection, insurance rates for connected e-bikes are dropped by up to 70%. The “1% insurance” means that €3,000 e-bike’s yearly premium is only 30€, which is about one third of the usual rate for a non-connected model.
“Through this partnership, we demonstrate how technological innovation creates real value for e-bike owners. The combination of IoT technology, a smart hub lock and integrated insurance sets a new standard for smart mobility and significantly reduces the risk of theft. This is exactly how insurance should work today – accessible, transparent and seamlessly integrated into the rider’s connected experience. The policy is available directly in the app, making protection effortless and affordable for every e-bike owner.”
This is a milestone for the industry. For the first time, insurance providers recognize that embedded connectivity isn’t just a digital upgrade, it’s an effective theft deterrent that pays for itself.
“For most riders, locking an e-bike still means dealing with an inconvenient locking and unlocking procedure and the constant fear of theft. Our mission is to make e-bike truly secure and effortless, so that more people can enjoy the freedom and convenience of cycling without compromise.”
How it works: one click for total protection
Locking the bike is effortless. The rider taps a single button in the Comodule app, activating multiple layers of protection in sync:
The 2Lock hub lock engages mechanically, blocking the wheel from spinning and its removal.
The motor immobilizes through Comodule’s secure IoT integration.
The motion sensors activate, monitoring every movement.
If someone tries to tamper with the bike, it sounds an alarm, the wheel is blocked, and notifies the rider instantly in the app. The thief cannot activate the motor or roll the bike away. The owner can track its live location in real time.
If the thief is still not deterred, and theft does occur, the rider can share the live tracking link with bike information directly with authorities or their network to react and retrieve the bike.
All of this is embedded in the experience for the bike owner when rolling away from the store. No mechanical locking process, no external trackers, no expensive premiums or complicated claims process. The user just activates the IoT and everything is live. One seamless experience as it should be.
Why it pays back
The security of bikes has always been the consumers’ obligation. They need buy physical locks, insurance and aftermarket trackers, which is inconvenient to do, but also use later, costlier than the embedded security bundle, and has smaller anti-theft impact. The embedded security solution just needs the digital activation to work, it can be used just with the app. It transforms the security from a cost into a long-term benefit. While manufacturers invest in IoT and smart locking technology, riders recover that value through lower insurance costs and higher peace of mind.
For OEMs, it’s a powerful differentiator. Offering a connected security and insurance package directly within the riding experience sets their products apart and builds ongoing engagement with the brand.
For riders, it’s a more complete product, but also simple economics: a one-time investment that quickly pays back through savings.
Not just for security
For e-bike manufacturers and fleet operators, this solution is more than theft prevention. Connectivity enables:
Branded App experiences: navigation, ride tracking, digital bike sharing, over-the-air updates to the bike and much more.
Bike brands can integrate service offerings, service reminders to the app and send targeted messages to the riders based on their demographics or riding behaviour.
A back end tool for bike brands, with valuable user and fleet data for business insights and new business opportunities.
Bike brands can now do data-based claim management for efficiency and stronger rider trust.
Bike brands can unlock new business potential through subscription-based or insurance-included bike models.
The system easy to adopt and compatible with multiple drivetrain systems. This gives OEMs the flexibility to scale securely while maintaining full control of their connected ecosystem.
A new benchmark for e-bike security
This collaboration marks the first time a third-party IoT platform, a mechanical lock system, and an insurer have worked together to create a fully integrated e-bike security and insurance model.
Comodule’s IoT solution communicates directly with the drivetrain for secure locking and diagnostics. 2Lock’s hub lock connects both physically and digitally, ensuring real immobilization. Hepster’s insurance recognizes this enhanced protection and rewards it with significantly lower premiums.
The result is an ecosystem that blends digital intelligence, physical security, and financial protection, a new benchmark for the security of e-bikes.
The market shift
This solution signals a larger shift in the e-bike industry. Connectivity is no longer just about data or dashboards. It’s about creating tangible value and more seamless experiences that benefits every stakeholder - riders, OEMs, and fleets alike.
As e-bikes evolve into digital platforms, embedded security and integrated insurance are standard expectations, just like they are in modern cars. Riders gain confidence and convenience, OEMs strengthen their brand and business model, and the industry can become ready for growth.
